It's been quite some time since my last review! First off, Happy New Year! Unfortunately, I got really caught up with school. My apologies for the inactivity! And as such, I have missed a lot of new releases, so I'm not sure whether or not I'll be going back to review them... I guess it will have to depend on how much time I have. But seeing as how school is starting to get really busy for me again, that seems unlikely for the time being.

I am also unsure about whether or not to keep this as a LiveJournal community. LJ has been a dying website for quite some time now, so I am contemplating moving it elsewhere, like BlogSpot or Tumblr or something. But again, busy with school, so I can't make really make any huge changes right now. I do have a new review coming soon though.

REVIEW: [2011.10.05] -OZ- - 爪牙 (maxi-single)

[2011.10.05] -OZ- - 爪牙 (maxi-single)

1. Reverse
2. Unseal
3. Ecdysis

Reverse (3:33) [PV]
As expected from -OZ-, they bring a strong intro. You can just tell from the beginning, with the instrumental build-up and Natsuki's deep growls that this is going to be a pump-up song. I like the melody and rhythm of the intro, but something just sounds a little off about it. I'm not exactly sure how to explain it, really. Like even thoug hthe music is deep and booming with bass, there's some strange guitar effect added to it that makes it sound staticy and hurts my ears. I actually extremely dislike this effect, and unfortunately, it persists throughout pretty much the entire song. If it wasn't there, this song would have been so much better. I also usually like their screams and growls, but not when that is the entire chorus. Quite disappointed to hear this as the a-side of their new release after almost a year since their last one.

REVIEW: [2011.09.28] シド - いつか (maxi-single)

[2011.09.28] シド - いつか (maxi-single)

1. いつか
2. 秋風
3. NO LDK (Live from 『dead stock TOUR 2011』)

いつか (4:51)
The song starts right off the bat with the chorus, which was quite sudden and certainly took me by surprise. It also sounded like Mao was straining his vocals quite a bit during this part, but it calms down once the verses start, coupled with relaxing instrumentals in the background. The guitars continuously have this kind of squeaky tone to it, but it sounds surprisingly good with the entire song. Similar to the beginning, the first few notes sung in the chorus sound strained, but eventually it grew on me over the course of the entire song. I don't usually like verses better than the chorus, but it is the case in this song. The instrumental break after the chorus and guitar solo are both very enjoyable (although unfortunately bass is hardly noticeable in the entire song other than briefly in the bridge), so apart from the initial surprise, this song turned out pretty good.

Review: [2011.09.21] Lustknot. - A BRUTAL FACT (maxi-single)

[2011.09.21] Lustknot. - A BRUTAL FACT (maxi-single)

3. 桔梗

This song begins with some kind of weird effect in the intro that seemed insect-like almost, so I wasn't sure what to make of that... but once that passes after the scream, it gets better. I'm really liking Yuki's voice in this song, especially doing the long "yeah" part. There's also one part in the second verse where the vocals do this singing/talking thing, which sounds very cool. And when it slows down after the second chorus, and Yuki uses his falsetto, it sounds really nice. I'm mostly talking about the vocals for this song since they are a little overpowering, and although the music is at a good pace, nothing about the instrumentals really jump out at me.

These are the releases I'm looking forward to this month~ I'm not sure how many I'd review, but I'm going to try to aim for all of them. I still need to get my hands on some of last month's releases, though, so this is going to be a slow ride.

I just recently heard of the new band Kameleo; they have a few previews uploaded on their YouTube page, and I like what I hear so far. the Raid. is also a new band who I've heard samples of and appear to be promising. Of course Synk;yet's [Re]:birth single got released prematurely lol.

REVIEW: [2011.09.21] SCREW - BRAINSTORM (maxi-single)

[2011.09.21] SCREW - BRAINSTORM (maxi-single)

2. Fester
3. L'Oiseau bleu
3. 雨夜ノ独奏者
4. S=r&b (Bonus Track)

So this song had an interesting concept since I read in an interview that Byou wanted this title for a song, so the music was composed around that title. The beginning is interesting and mysterious, with Byou's low whispering. The instrumentals are very good (I like the bass in the verses), but nothing in the vocal melodyline really jumps out at me. Even during the chorus, it's not exactly catchy nor memorable. I definitely enjoy the instrumental breaks in this song more than when the vocals come in. For the record, I enjoy listening to Byou's lower register better, rather than he starts sings in his normal register with his chest voice. Overall, it's a rather average song. Not bad, but not spectacular either (though I am finding myself enjoying it more as I listen to it more, so my opinion on it may change later - the chorus is already starting to sound better to me as I wrote this).

REVIEW: [2011.10.05] Synk;yet-シンクイェット- - [Re]:birth (maxi-single)

[2011.10.05] Synk;yet-シンクイェット- - [Re]:birth (maxi-single)

1. [Re]:birth
2. Fatal lovers
3. 硝子に映る夢見る少女、羽を求めて…

[Re]:birth (4:44) [sample]
Man, was I ever shocked in the BEST WAY POSSIBLE as soon as the intro began. I could literally listen to it over and over again, and in the words of my friend, as soon as he heard it: "HOLY SHIT THE INTRO TO [RE]:BIRTH IS FRIGGEN AWESOME". Enough said. It's got fast guitars, fast drums; I don't even play those instruments but that must take a lot of skill. The vocals are also very pleasing to the ears. Liki has the kind of voice that seems really common amongst visual kei indies bands nowadays, but it is still nice nonetheless. I really like the overall pace of the whole song, as the awesome gutiars from the intro still continue to impress throughout the rest of the song. The style, especially the catchy melody in the chorus, reminded me a little of ViViD. It was thoroughly enjoyable and without a question a repeat-worthy song. I would definitely want to watch this song being performed live; I can only imagine the energy exerted from the members, especially the drummer, Kouji.

REVIEW: [2011.08.31] the GazettE - REMEMBER THE URGE (maxi-single)

[2011.08.31] the GazettE - REMEMBER THE URGE (maxi-single)

3. 痴情

The intro starts off very strong, though I really dislike that feedback effect. Love the fast-paced drumming in the beginning that reminded me nostalgically of Ruder, one of my favorite songs. The guitars are nice, but also sound rather generic. It has some good guitar riffs during the verses and in between vocal parts. Vocals are good, but the melody line isn't very catchy or memorable. The song slows down at the 2:55 mark, and Ruki sings in his lower register, a sound that I'd always been fond of. The song pretty much kept at the same level through the entire song, so it lacked any hooks for me.

I'm on a bit of a roll today with the reviews since I just recently set this community up and wanted to put some stuff up so it's not so empty. In the future, I most likely won't be posting reviews on such a frequent basis, but I will try my best nonetheless.
